Forests and Wood Utilization Post-graduate 'Creator' Course

Forestry and Regional Forest Management
Students learn a comprehensive range of skills and knowledge necessary to manage forest areas, including nature conservation and the development of forestry industries.

Satoyama Woodland Management
In this course students study the ecology, sustainable management and recovery of Satoyama woodlands which have faced devastation in recent years. The focus is on the development and utilization of renewable forest products which foster Satoyama woodlands biodiversity.

Environmental Education and Community Development
Working from a participatory community development model, students study environmental education with a view to proposing new sustainable regional resource strategies.

Wooden Architecture
This course teaches wooden architectural construction, design, and materials including earthquake resistant structural design and measurement. Students gain an understanding of traditional wood production and construction and the connection between architecture and the creation of a sustainable society.

Craft and Furniture Making
Students are taught design and woodworking skills necessary to engage in craft and furniture making. One of the focuses of the course is how traditional craft, carpentry skills and thinking can be utilized in contemporary society.

■ Objective
The objective of this course is to produce specialists with extensive knowledge of forestry and wood utilization, outstanding planning skills and strong creative abilities.

■ Applicant Eligibility
Applicants should either have graduated from university, be due to graduate, or have an equivalent level of professional experience.

■ Course Length
2 years

■ Enrollment Limit
20 students

■ Special Characteristics of the Curriculum
 ・Small class sizes, individual tuition
  Students are able to study their specialty intensively in small tutorials and receive individual tuition.
 ・Emphasis on practical skills
  Students undertake activities and projects in the Gifu region in order to practically     apply their specialist skills and knowledge.
 ・Inter-disciplinary projects
  Students undertake research projects with the goal of solving issues related to regional forests and the use of forest products. Project teams are inter-disciplinary and with the cooperation of people living in regional areas of Gifu,students conduct case studies to evaluate issues that need to be addressed in forestry, regional development, wooden architecture and craft and furniture making.
